Tampa apartment kitchen fire destroys one unit, damages two others
TAMPA — A midnight fire at the Avalon Village Apartments, 14350 Hensel Lane near 22nd Street N, that destroyed one unit and damaged two others was caused by a kitchen fire, said Ray Yeakley, spokesman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
Five adults and seven children from the three families were displaced. The Red Cross provided shelter for them last night, Yeakley said. He did not know the extent of the smoke and water damage to the two apartments or how much it would cost to fix, only that they are uninhabitable.
"There does need to be some cleanup work," Yeakley said.
No one was injured, and the blaze was put out in about 15 minutes. The cause of the fire was burning grease on a stove, and the investigation is closed.
